'Retroactive cover' covers you from claims that might arise from previous work conducted before your current professional indemnity policy commences. 

Remember often there's a delay between an event and a resulting claim. So if you already have PI insurance but are moving to a new insurer make sure the policy has 'retroactive cover' built in to cover work insured under your previous policy.  This way all your bases will be covered.
